One Thing

By

Today at church, we did something we’ve never done before.

We had a “one thing” weekend. For the entire service, we kept our attention, our affection, our thoughts, and our words focused on Jesus alone. There was no sermon. No discussion time. No additional elements competing for attention. For one hour, we made Jesus the one thing—the main thing, the only thing.

We sang songs of praise and adoration. We lifted His name high. We prayed to and exalted the King who is worthy.

As we worshiped, I had this picture of all our church campuses, scattered across different locations, all worshiping and exalting God at the same time. And then the picture zoomed out—beyond our campuses to other churches in our region, our state, our time zone. Then it widened again to include the entire world.

Day and night, across the globe, the name of Jesus is being praised. His name is true and right. I was reminded how small I am—and how vast the Kingdom of God truly is.

His Kingdom stretches far beyond what I can comprehend.

Later, another image came to mind—the scene in The Lion King where Mufasa shows Simba the kingdom and says, “Everything the light touches is our kingdom.”

God’s Kingdom is like that, too. Where the light reaches, the Kingdom reigns. Jesus Himself is called the Light. Wherever His light falls—our homes, our churches, our hearts—comes under the rule and reign of God.

We are called His ambassadors, carrying that light into shadowed places. And today reminded me that when we make Jesus the one thing, everything else finds its proper place.

Jesus, today we made You the one thing.
Receive our praise, our attention, and our affection.
Recenter our lives under Your Kingdom,
and help us carry Your light wherever You send us.
Amen.
