The Way

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
— John 14:6

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.”
— Proverbs 14:12

“Teach me your ways, O LORD, that I may live according to your truth.”
— Psalm 86:11

“Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”
— 1 John 2:6

Today I am meditating on Jesus as The Way.

A way is a journey—a direction, a process. It’s not simply the destination, but how you get there. When Jesus says He is the Way, He is answering an even deeper question: the way to what? To the Father.

Jesus isn’t offering a map or a set of instructions. He is offering Himself. His way is not merely a route to heaven; it is a way of being human that leads us back into relationship with God. To follow Jesus is not just to believe something about Him, but to walk with Him—to shape our lives around His life.

The verse in Proverbs is especially sobering. There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. This is the way of the world. It often feels right. It can look wise, sound convincing, and promise fulfillment. But if it is not aligned with God’s way, it ultimately leads away from life.

That’s what makes this so unsettling. The wrong way doesn’t usually announce itself as wrong. It often appeals to our instincts for comfort, control, or self-protection. It can feel empowering or even freeing at first. And that’s why relying on my thoughts and feelings alone isn’t enough. They are real, but they are not always reliable guides.

This is why knowing God’s ways matters. His Word becomes an anchor point. His Spirit becomes our guide—our counselor and teacher—helping us discern not just what feels right, but what leads to life.

So how can we know if we’re on the right path?

Scripture gives us a gentle but honest measure: look at the fruit. Are we walking the way Jesus walked? Not perfectly, but directionally. Not without struggle, but with growing alignment. Over time, His way produces love, peace, humility, and a quiet steadiness of soul.

Walking the way of Jesus isn’t always easy, but it is life-giving. It is marked not by constant clarity, but by faithful movement—step by step—toward the Father.

Jesus, help us remember that You are the Way.
When the world promises shortcuts or alternatives, help us see them for what they are—counterfeits.
When we are tempted by comfort, convenience, or ease, give us the courage to choose Your way instead.
Teach us to walk as You walked, trusting that Your way—though sometimes narrow—is the one that leads to life.
Amen.
