Breath & Bread

By

I was listening to a podcast today, and just as it was getting started, a small comment was made that has stayed with me.

The guest was asked something like, “How important is the Word of God to you?”
And he responded,
“If prayer is like breathing, then the Word of God is like food. How important are breathing and eating in your everyday life? How long could you go without either?”

That idea has stayed with me.

Prayer — the breath we breathe toward God.
Can we even go a few minutes without breathing?

And yet, how often do I trade prayer for worry, or petitioning for complaining?
Lord, forgive me.
My connection with You is the very air I breathe.

And the Word of God — like daily bread.
Sure, we can go a few days… maybe even weeks.
But eventually we begin to starve. To weaken. To wither.

If I’m honest, it only takes me a few hours without food before I feel it — the grumbling, the hunger pains, the unmistakable need for sustenance.
Lord, Your Word satisfies the hunger of my soul.

So today I’m sitting with this question:
How can I depend on prayer and the Word the way I depend on my next breath and my next meal?

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
