Torn

By

This morning, I was awestruck at the accessibility of God.

God is so close—yet so often we miss Him.

I was thinking about how, in the Old Testament, the presence of God was exclusive. The temple contained a special room—the Holy of Holies—that could only be entered once a year by the high priest, and only after carefully following God’s instructions. A thick, floor-to-ceiling curtain separated this room from the rest of the temple. God’s presence was so sacred, so holy, that entering it carelessly could cost someone their life.

If that were my experience of God, I can imagine how He might feel distant… or even dangerous.

And then Jesus changed everything.

The Gospels tell us that at the moment of Jesus’ death on the cross, the veil separating the Holy of Holies was torn from top to bottom—signaling the end of one era and the beginning of something entirely new.

We are told now that we are God’s temple, and that His Spirit dwells within us (1 Corinthians 3:16).

We are the new Holy of Holies.

Because of Jesus, we are invited to approach the throne of grace with confidence, to receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16).

What was once inaccessible is now freely available—24/7/365.

I can’t help but wonder what those who lived before Christ would think of this gift. We live with a level of access to God that generations before us could only dream of.

And yet…

How often do we take it for granted?
How often do we move through our day feeling powerless or alone?
How often do we forget how astonishing this really is?

The Spirit of God dwells in us.
Are we even aware?

I don’t want to take what is sacred and treat it as common. Just because I have constant access to the infinite God, doesn’t mean His presence should be treated casually. I want to approach Him with reverence and gratitude—with humility and holy awe—remembering that the God who is near is also holy, holy, holy.

Jesus, it’s astounding that You choose to make Your home in us.
That we are the body of Christ, and Your Spirit dwells within us.
Help me comprehend this mystery.
Help me become more aware of Your presence in me.
Thank You for always being near, always available.
Amen.
