Alpha

By

Last year, I was given a page with forty names of God and invited to spend time meditating on each one. As I thought about how to begin 2026, this felt like the right place to start.

Today’s name is Alpha.

It appears three times in Scripture, all in the book of Revelation. Across those passages, God declares that He is the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end, the first and the last, who was and who is and who is to come.

When I think about the word alpha, I naturally think about beginnings—about God being outside of time, before time, before all else. I’m reminded of Colossians 1:15–18, where Scripture declares that Jesus is the firstborn of all creation. All things were created in Him, through Him, and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

But alpha doesn’t just mean first. It also means primary, preeminent, most important.

To call God Alpha is to confess that He is the main thing—the one thing. It means valuing His ways over every other voice. It means trusting that He determines what is good, what is true, and what is right.

And that’s hard.

Our world today is built around what is true for you, what feels right to you, what is good according to you. So today, on this first day of the year, I want to realign myself with the Alpha—the One who was, and is, and always will be.

May He reign supreme over my thoughts, my decisions, and my life.
May He be the ruler, the leader, the authority I submit to.

This week I’m memorizing Philippians 1:6: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” I’m reminded that as Alpha, God is the initiator of all things. What he begins, He sustains. And what he sustains, He faithfully brings to completion.

What a perfect beginning to a new year. The reminder that God is Alpha- first in everything, THE most important. May the Alpha of your life bless you this year.
