Today kicked off our church’s summer series: 60 Days of Enjoying God and the Life He’s Giving You.
Throughout the summer, we will be practicing celebration — paying attention and calling attention to the goodness of God.
Nothing big. Nothing flashy. Just taking a moment each day to write down one way we enjoyed God, experienced His goodness, or want to express gratitude to Him.
It all feels very Ordinary Abide.
So I figured, if I am going to participate in this, and if I am going to write it down, I might as well write it down here.
Because while I like the idea of writing daily, it is actually very difficult for me to do. I feel pressure to write something poignant or profound, and if I am honest, sometimes the day is just very mundane.
But that is what is so good about this practice. Even in the mundane, we can still be grateful. We can still enjoy God and the life He is giving us.
And typically, we find what we focus on.
If I focus on how God is good to me, I am probably going to be blown away by the goodness of God.
But if I focus on all the ways I wish life was different, I am probably going to be stuck in comparison and disappointment.
And honestly, the first option sounds so much better to me.
The thing about practicing is that I do not have to be perfect. I just have to start.
So here we start again.
Today, I am grateful I was able to go for a walk this morning. I am grateful for all the compliments I got in my cool, new, thrifted black romper, but more than that, I am grateful that I feel good in it, because feeling good in my clothes has been challenging these days.
I am grateful for the A/C we have going in our house because summer is HERE. I am grateful for the sweet delights of cold brew coffee and jalapeño cheddar sourdough bread, which makes such a delicious grilled cheese.
I am grateful to be part of a church that practices celebration and gives us real, practical ways to practice celebrating all week.
And I am grateful for the way my kids have embraced reduced screen time so far this summer and are entertaining themselves with board games and card games.
What a good life God is giving me.
